OUR SUMMER CONCERT
Saturday 28th June 2025 - UTTERLY RUTTERLY
TRINITY St John sub Castro, Lewes
Sir John Rutter is one of the UK’s most accomplished and prolific living composers and an icon of choral music. He turns 80 this year and New Sussex Singers are marking the occasion with a summer concert entitled ‘Utterly Rutterly’. We’ll be accompanied by a Jazz Trio - this might be our best summer concert yet!
We’ll feature Rutter’s Birthday Madrigals, written for the 75th birthday of his friend, the great jazz pianist George Shearing. The classic madrigal texts are brought to life for contemporary audiences through Rutter’s music - listen to the first madrigal on John’s website HERE
We’ve paired the madrigals with George Shearing’s much loved song cycle, Songs & Sonnets from Shakespeare (Rutter conducted the first performance). Set to Shakespearian texts, they are exciting and accessible and reflect Shearing’s English musical background and his American jazz influences.
We’ll throw in excerpts from British composer Iain Farrington’s wildly upbeat Jazz Cantata
Then Sing We All, which celebrates the joy of singing together. Alongside other Rutter favourites, we’ll showcase his talents as an arranger with his setting of Hoagy Carmichael’s Skylark, a standard of the golden age of American song, and his unpublished setting of Henry Mancini’s Moon River.
Doors open early at 6pm so you can grab a drink from the bar and enjoy some pre-concert live jazz.
The bar will be stocked by independent wine specialists South Downs Cellars
You can buy tickets on the door but we advise booking in advance for this one if you can.
Doors 6pm (bar and jazz). Concert 7pm with an interval. Tickets £16, under-16s £5.
